Carved Porcelain Bowl

This carved porcelain bowl was made by brushing 22 layers of grey porcelain slip into a mould I made. Each layer has to dry before adding the next one, so this is a painstaking process. Once it was released from the mould, I hand carved the texture and then smoothed out any burrs, being careful not to obscure the layers which look like wood grain due to the slightly differing tones of the layers. After it was bisque fired, I glazed the inside with a clear studio glaze and fired it again to 1220 degrees Celsius. This elegant piece of functional art would be a beautiful focal point in any decor and can be used to serve hot or cold food. Dishwasher safe.
