Crystalline Chanukah Menorah
My crystalline Chanukah Menorah was hand built from high fire stoneware. The ‘Shamash’ (central candle) is recessed less than the other candles, so despite the surface or the Menorah being flat, the shamash stands taller than the other candles creating a Kosher Menorah. The crystalline glaze which I made in my studio needs to be fired to 1300 degrees Celsius over almost 17 hours for the 2-D crystals to develop. The piece was raised with special risers during the firing and placed on a drip dish, to collect the running glaze as it flowed down the piece in the kiln. Afterwards, the Chanukkiah was separated from the riser and sanded.
