Sculptural Kurinuki Cup & Saucer in Turquoise Glaze

$220

Fully glazed ceramic cup and saucer with porcelain crystals.

This unique ceramic cup and saucer set is hand-carved using the traditional kurinuki technique, then fully coated in a flowing, high-gloss turquoise glaze. As the glaze moves across the carved surface, it creates soft tonal shifts – pooling in deeper cuts and thinning over higher  edges – emphasizing the tactile landscape of the form.

Carved porcelain crystals are attached to one side of the cup in a cluster, echoed by a group of smaller crystals on part of the sculptural saucer. Each crystal is glazed in the same turquoise hue, with their bases hand-painted in 24k gold lustre, transitioning upward into a soft, subtle layer of mother of pearl.

The lustre is delicate and luminous – offering a quiet shimmer rather than a bold gleam.

Unlike the matt and raw textures found in other pieces in the collection, this cup is fully glazed, creating a unified, almost fluid surface across the entire form, other than the raised foot. The saucer has a raw, rugged and carved edge and a is glazed where the cup rests.

The piece is designed to be cupped gently with both hands – the crystals are decorative and are not intended as a handle. It has been fired three times, including a final lustre firing to seal the gold and mother of pearl finishes. The form of this cup is particularly suitable for enhancing a ritual tea ceremony.

More than a cup, this is functional ceramic art, offering a moment of stillness, beauty and quiet glow – whether used or displayed.

Hand wash only.
