Handmade Carved Gingko Ceramic Plate-Bowl Set (2)

Set of 2 one-of-a-kind hand-carved ceramic plate-bowls.

Meticulously crafted from dark brown stoneware, this limited-edition ceramic plate-bowl set is a celebration of surface, form and botanical detail. These pieces are entirely hand-built, layered and carved – with no templates, stamps or repeats – making the set completely unique and irreplicable.

Each piece begins with layers of white porcelain slip, hand painted over the interior and inner walls. Once the surface reaches the leather-hard stage, it is freehand carved with gingko leaf motifs – a slow, meditative process that reveals the dark clay beneath the porcelain using the sgraffito technique.

After bisque firing, the surface design is enhanced with latex masking and hand-painted underglaze.

One plate features a white porcelain background with teal green Gingko leaves. The other displays a teal and green background with white gingko leaves. The latex resist was carefully applied and removed to preserve the crisp contours before a clear, glossy glaze was applied on the entire interior surface. The outer walls of both plates are left raw and unglazed, showcasing the natural, textured beauty of the dark brown clay.

Whether used to serve everyday dishes, or displayed as sculptural accents on a shelf or table, this pair is as functional as it is expressive. I recommend hand washing this set even though the plates are technically dishwasher safe.
